|
Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir's third recording, "At the Rim of the Carol-Singing Sea", was released in December 1999. Featuring Gordon Pinsent reading Dylan Thomas's "A Child's Christmas in Wales", this recording includes performances by all four NSYC ensembles. In a contemporary version of the traditional festival of lessons and carols, Thomas's narrative is separated into defined sections, linked together by carols. CBC TV filmed an hour-long Christmas special based on the CD with the choirs and Gordon Pinsent which was broadcast throughout Atlantic Canada on December 27, 1999.
NSYC has begun an annual tradition centering around the reading of this renowned Christmas story, building a lessons and carols concert and inviting a prominent citizen to tell the story. On December 17, 2000, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson (Governor General of Canada) was the very special guest of the NSYC at their annual Christmas concert held at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Mme Clarkson reprised Mr. Pinsent's role as narrator for the event.
This CD received the Canadian East Coast Music Association (ECMA) Award for Best Classical Recording in 2001.
